Royal Rumble 2015 & RAW review

Only 4 days later but here’s my thoughts on the Rumble & RAW! And thanks to the super-brah on the hard camera with our shart! It’s January 15th, 2015 from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with 17,164 in attendance and about a million subscribers on the WWE Network, it’s the 2015 Royal Rumble!

Pre-Show MAAAAAIN event was The New Day vs Team CAT (Cesaro, Adam rose & Tyson kidd)

    Team CAT

New Day depress me. They got “New! Day Sucks!” chants & boos by the end. However Team CAT need to be a thing. Tyson is wearing cat claw gloves, this gimmick has legs (4 of them!) They were also WAY more over in Philly (a renowned smark crowd) and Tyson picked up the win, making everyone very happy. Decent pre-show match, shame it wasn’t on the PPV.

    Outlaws vs The Ascension

Whenever I see the Outlaws I think of how Triple H must love hiring his mates, even those that slammed him for years in TNA and shoot interviews. I bet Road Dogg just said we were trying to get heat and Aitch said ‘fair enough’. I don’t understand the backlash The Ascension got for cutting a kayfabe “we’re the best” promo (should they say they suck?) on their RAW debut but they’ve quickly turned into a jobber act in a matter of weeks, which is even faster than fellow NXT call-up Xavier Woods. To be honest, the Legion of Demolition would make great (intentional) comedy jobbers like Heath Slater. It was always a rib having two ‘decent’ sized newbs being booked like they’re the Road Warriors – they’ll have to learn their place, and they’re only large compared to some acts in NXT. In any case, the roster does need jobbers, these two can do those jobs, instead of making mid-carders lose to each other (like new IC champ Wade Barrett jobbing to NXT’s SIN CARA!)
Despite being trounced by old-timers on RAW, the Ascension controlled the majority of the match with coma-inducing headlocks that’d make Randy Orton proud. The Outlaws never really had a comeback and Conor & Viktor won with a kind of TOTAL ELIMINATION! Kronus aside, it was a bad match.

The Usos (c) vs. Miz and Mizdow

It’s come to my attention that Miz does not catch people who dive on the outside. What an asshole! That’s dangerous. Weirdly, Miz is actually the stunt-double of the team: Sandow fakes his bumps on the outside whilst Miz gets battered and actually takes bumps. Philly (and everyone else) loves Sandow so they held off his tags for a while but the Usos got the win, meaning Miz & Sandow should be out of the chase for hopefully more than a month. Fine but instantly forgettable, as PPV tag title matches generally are.

The Bellas vs. Paige and Natalya

LET ME HOLLA AT YA PLAYA! FOURTH TAG MATCH of the night. Nattie’s been on NXT as well tagging with Charlotte, and on RAW we have the similar ‘let’s team up out of respect’ angle with Paige. Also the two have been feeling the effects of LESBIAN POLLEN (mind games!) on Total Divas. The Bellas look nothing alike now, you can tell which one’s vegan, and which one eats meat (rarr!). Good job Cena. The Bellas do this rolling slam deeley to Nattie. V1 said The Hardyz used to do it, I said no, never. Is V1 or myself right? Similar to the Ascension match the heels were in control for the most part, couple of blown spots (although Nikki’s definitely improved), no hot tag, the heels just win after a nice Nigel forearm. Fart of a match.

WWE World Title Match: Brock Lesnar (c) vs. John Cena vs. Seth Rollins

It ended up being a fantastic idea to add Seth to the match. Himself and Brock work REALLY, REALLY WELL as sneaky heel Seth would bump like a madman and Brock would hulk-smash his way through with effortless rag-doll German Suplexes. I don’t think I’ve heard the “John Cena Suuuucks” singing to his theme song on TV before but we had it. No time for Cena doing his standard spots (there’s literally nothing fresh or inventive he can do for me) like double-AAing the stooges and his shit punches comeback. Seth looked incredible bumping and working his ass off, punctuating with two high spots, elbow-dropping Lesnar through the announce table and performing a beautiful Phoenix Splash to Cena. Captain Crossfit, what a boss! Brock looked like an indestructible beast and scored an F5 for the win to retain. Man, I’d love to see Lesnar/Rollins at Mania. Guaranteed to deliver. The match was excellent, highly recommend you watch it.

    The Royal Rumble Match

    • Who booked this shit? Not Pat Patterson, that’s who. #1 & #2 was The Awesome Truth, here you could see someone in an OSW t-shart!
    • Bubba Ray Dudley was a surprise entrant (went down a treat in Philly). He looks to have put on a lot of the weight he lost in TNA. Without D-Von he did the Wazzup & 3D with Truth.
    • Bray eliminated a good few (reports say they’re considering him as Undertaker’s Mania opponent) but his feud with Ambrose really hasn’t helped. We got to see The Boogeyman interact, such a strong gimmick I’m surprised WWE didn’t have a place for him. DDP made a surprise entrance as well, great to see him! Hit the Diamond cutter on a couple of mid-carders, awesome. Please bring wrestling gear next time!
    • Daniel Bryan was #10 and got eliminated after #15. I watched this with the lads and that’s the point where we checked out of the match. Who cares now? December to Dismember booking; get the actual faces (RVD/Punk) out first so hopefully you’ll cheer for Vince’s babyface (Bobby Lashley), because that went down a treat. The crowd weren’t so angry/chanty as they were dismissive & apathetic I felt.
    • Curtis Axel was attacked by the Vintner Erik Rowan and never entered the match. WHERE’S THE JUSTICE FOR CURTIS AXEL? (in kayfabe he never entered the match – you’d need to enter the match before it finishes, if that makes sense)
    • Jaysus STATE OF YOUR ROSTER DEPTH MATE! The AMOUNT of jobbers in this match. It was like the 1997 Rumble where half of them were Mexicans. Expecting Latin Lover to come out.
    • The crowd broke out of their funk for Mizdow, but of course WWE eliminate him in under 30 seconds and the crowd turn again.
    • Kofi’s spot (he got a big cheer as we know he’ll do something amazing) was getting eliminated quickly and the rosebuds putting him back in. It was so weak we assumed there’d be another… but no, he just gets eliminated. Sigh!
    • They didn’t book any big spots (just the aforementioned and Titus getting the Santino quick-elimination schtick which isn’t a thing) so it was a boring match, far inferior to even last year. Ok the crowd were far angrier last year, but that the match was decent enough until #30 Mysterio came out and told everyone Bryan’s not in the match.
    • Further compounding things was that obvious winner Roman Reigns didn’t have a good match. Couple eliminations but nothing notable. I should mention the scenario in 2015 is NOWHERE similar to 2014, as in 2014, Shield member Roman was hidden & protected by Rollins & Ambrose, and was the last alternative to Boo-tista, whereas this year he’s the most-pushed babyface with awful comedy promos & delivery.
    • Big Show and Kane were the slow, plodding dominant heels (to chants of Bullshit and We Want Refunds) who were the final four in 2000 as well. I’ve no interest in seeing them in 2015. It’s so demoralising seeing Show and Kane take out Ziggler, Ambrose & Bray. YOU DON’T LIKE WHAT YOU LIKE! Things got so bad the crowd chanted for Rusev, the foreign heel (he was knocked out but not eliminated, we’d forgotten about him but the crowd could see him at the apron). Reigns wins it eliminating those 3 (a quick, non-interesting finish, he just turfed them out without a proper fight).
    • WWE knew Reigns would be booed and trotted out the Rock to endorse him, because surely you can’t boo Reigns if the Rock’s there? Wrong. Wow. (Rock has a “what the fuck?” reaction to it, giffed below, it’s magic). They do have a post-PPV interview on the Network where they both fumble over their words.
All in all, one of the worst rumbles in years, not just because of the winner, but a poorly-constructed, boring match with little star power and an unappealing finish – WWE did Reigns no favours. No real iron man/lots-of-eliminations push, no 2-big babyfaces squaring off etc, and Bryan should’ve been there until the very end. The crowd could’ve been much more vicious. Bit of a disaster. I get Vince thinks the handsome superstar Reigns valiantly fought off the dominant corporate giants and gets the endorsement of his cousin & massive babyface superstar, but if he thinks that would work, he’s alarmingly out of touch.

    #CancelWWENetwork

Hilariously, #CancelWWENetwork was the #1 trend straight afterwards. I think it’s a great way to send your disapproval but I also think it’s hypocritical as maybe 1% of those tweeting it actually cancelled their subscription. Indirectly responding to it, WWE announced they cracked 1 million subscribers (which is legit as the free month, the Rumble hype and fallout did put them over the mark). They did lose subs but was far outweighed by what they gained. Probably worth noting that WWE will continue to do what WWE wants because it’s WWE’s company, despite doing what the fans want would make more business sense. It’s a really petty ego trip – a vain, selfish act, like continuing to make movies despite repeatedly losing millions on most films! That said the best thing to come out of wrestling are the snarky pictures that come out afterwards! Thanks for sending me your tweets, it’s awesome.

    RAW AFTER THE RUMBLE

    • With BLOODY JUNO (the snowstorm) cancelling RAW, they cobbled together a 3-hour show from WWE HQ, replaying the Rumble & title match from the prior night and doing sit-down interviews with their most prominent talents (Brock/Heyman, Seth, Bryan and also a skit with Dean). I didn’t mind them showing PPV matches on free TV because it’s a one-off and they were up against time getting an entirely new show together.
    • It was a scrambling production, Michael Cole constantly tripping over his words (which is a rarity) and I’m assuming Vince, breathing heavily off-screen. Cole’s questions were really stupid (as all questions in WWE are, “when you hit the move, did you think you’d win?”)
    • The crowd-less atmosphere gave promos the sense of gravitas. Reigns came off really well, quiet; absorbing the verbal jabs Heyman masterfully threw at him, admitting the crowd’s disapproval and wanting to fight Brock. This is probably Reigns at his best right now.
    • Seth plays the loud-mouthed, cowardly dick heel to perfection. He decreed Brock will have to take his chair, and when confronted, swats it away and walks off. Amazing. I love how Brock was calm and polite (“excuse me, I believe you’re in my chair”), and thanked Cole for congratulating him on his title win. There’s no need to be angry, he is the best and it’s a fact.
    • Bryan similarly addressed Reigns’ shortcomings (which was pretty much as shoot as you’ll get on WWE TV) but wasn’t incensed. It’s sad that he’ll be overlooked come Mania again, but he’s incredibly talented, so he’ll always be important. At Mania he’s pegged to wrestle either Ziggler (they were mentioning it on twitter) or V1’s favourite, vs Sheamus for a third time.
WWE lowered the boos in the Rumble repeat but I wouldn’t recommend re-watching it. But watch the title match again! The promos however were refreshingly candid and did wonders for the world title situation. A massive positive coming off a wave of online negativity over Reigns.

2 Questions: Do you know anyone that cancelled the Network, and what did you think of the Rumble match overall, was it as bad as I thought?

  • Royal Rumble 2014 match

    Royal Rumble 2014 match

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]To set the scene, WWE fans rallied behind Daniel Bryan after losing his title in 8 seconds to Sheamus at WrestleMania 28. Since then, Bryan’s popularity soared into MEGA HOT territory, peaking coming into the Summer of 2013, where Bryan beat Cena (clean) for the WWE title. However Aitch immediately heel-turned on Bryan, allowing Randy Orton to cash in his MITB briefcase, therefore nullifying any great work Cena had done and placing the heat on themselves. They delayed giving Bryan his big run as champion and tried to quell the crowd rallying behind him, which only made things worse. “#HijackRAW” was a thing – fans destroyed segments by chanting “YES” and “Daniel Bryan” during any segment they saw fit, demanding Bryan be the top guy. Most hilariously during the go-home RAW for TLC (Orton vs Cena), Steph was praising Triple H and fans completely killed the segment chanting for Bryan. The WWE machine decided to not only delay Bryan’s run, but cancel it entirely, in favour of a returning Batista vs Orton main event of WrestleMania. Fast forward to the Rumble. They booked Bryan in a singles match with Bray Wyatt and said he’s definitely not competing in the Rumble. Although fans (including myself) knew this, we expected that to be an obvious swerve. They couldn’t really cast aside the freshest, most popular full-timer around, could they? Surely he’ll be #30, right?

    Rey
Watched this last night, here’s my thoughts on it:
    • Beforehand Flair (on the pre-show panel) predicts BATISTA (which gets boos). An incensed Flair shouts “learn to love it!” Ha!
    • Punk (#1) was still with the company! Wears a Gracie Academy hoodie. Odd how he carved out a niche as the guy who does what he wants (ie nobody else, save Brock, could do that). He looks ABSOLUTELY KNACKERED (he’d walk out before RAW the next day, refusing plans to wrestle Aitch at Mania). His haircut and chops makes him look like SUCH a Pikey! Himself and Seth kick off, they’re great together, wish they had a singles PPV match.
    • Cody (#4) pre-stardust with his cool woah-oh heel song. JBL’s got his cog notes and throws out “this guy won at this entry” facts every so often.
    • Rusev’s main roster debut, pre-lana but has the song. Swagger goes right for him – i.e. they’ve been teasing Rusev Swagger since his first night out of NXT.
    • Kofi (#8) gets big pop as the crowd know he’ll do something awesome. This time Rusev catches him on the outside and puts him on the barricade; Kofi does a running jump to the apron (awesome!) gets a huge cheer. He then hangs on by hooking both feet under the bottom rope, and twats Swagger with his own boot.
    • Ambrose & Reigns enter via the regular entrance way, it’s weird.
    • Kevin Nash’s dyed brown short hair & goatee show up to the nWo theme.
    • Reigns murders everyone, people boo Ziggler’s exit, as he was well over in Pittsburgh. With 3 members (and Punk skulking in the corner), they dominate.
    • WWE’s production truck allocated 10 seconds for Khali’s song (#16) but he was only halfway down the runway. He’s immediately thrown back out, his knees must’ve been really bad. Not complaining!
    • Sheamo returns to take on the shield. Gets a loud cheer returning from a shoulder injury 5 months ago. I’ve been enjoying him not being on TV recently. Hopefully they do something different with him, “babyface bully” wasn’t great!
    • #19 Fandango – fans immediately sing his song and do the finger dance. That’s what you get for being concussed Fandango, buried and repackaged with a new song people can’t hum.
    • El Torito does a hold-the-midget-at-arm’s-length with Punk, he eliminated Fandango before being eliminated by Reigns – Fandango catches him on the outside and lays him down gently so he doesn’t take a bump. What a great guy.
    • Cesaro swing: fans go out of time at the FORTH revolution and start cheering at 17.
    • JBL at #24. Cole quips that this is the “JBL character’s first match” (as Bradshaw entered at least the 98 Rumble). I know he’s trying to make this a big deal but don’t call people characters. Otherwise they’d better count Isaac yankem and Fake Diesel amongst Kane’s appearances then too, ya bastards! JBL does a stupid “hold my coat” routine and gets eliminated immediately. I get he’s not wrestling but it just makes him look like a moron, JBL’s not an idiot character either. He gets “you still got it” chants, oh fuck off.
    • During JBL’s entrance, Kane sneaking under the ring is caught on camera, a rare fuck up.
    • Usos and Wyatts gets no crowd reaction, same with Big E. Ryback gets immediate Goldberg chants. When did those stop? I suppose he got de-pushed with Rybaxl so he stopped getting backlash from fans.
    • Batista gets a pop and then a few seconds later, gets loud boos. The turnaround is ridiculous! Really funny.
    • R-O-N Mastrio (#30) enters, Cole reams off his fact sheet (jaysus, he’s terrible for that) and immediately the fans cop Daniel Bryan’s not coming out. They loudy boo and chant for Bryan. I’ve never heard anything like it in a rumble. It’s relentless and gets louder for Rey’s spots, jeering him with a pop when he’s eliminated and back to hijacking the show.
    • Reigns eliminates Seth, Dean and Cesaro for trying to eliminate him, breaking Kane’s record at 12.
    • Kane does a run-in and takes out Punk to more boos. (Punk never gets praise for going 49:12 in this Rumble! He did Road Dogg in the corner for most of it though!). Pairing Punk and Kane. Now they’re pairing Bryan and Kane. Why can’t they pair someone shit with Kane?
    • FINISH: Three guys left: Sheamus, reigns an Batista, as the crowd loudly boo. Anyone buy this on DVD – did they dub the audio? I’d forgotten how bad the boos were. They chant “no” instead of “brogue” to Sheamo beating his chest. Crowd eventually chant for Roman and Batista delivers a nasty stiff spear, OWW. Reigns is much softer. Fans boo Reigns’ elimination and BOOOOOOOOO, no! and daniel bryan chants. Besides Batista looking a little pissed, they still all did their spots (I imagine they thought they’d fix it in post.) I can’t recall any other WWE PPV quite like it. Batista/Big Show ECW Hammerstein they weren’t rallying behind anyone, just booing these lads. I watched it live in the Woolshed Pub first time around so I couldn’t hear much of the audio (beyond there were boos) and it wasn’t until 2nd viewing I heard just how vicious it was. It’s worse than I remember! That said, I’m so happy the crowd forced WWE’s hand to MAKE FANS HAPPY (why is this a fight?) but it tinged Bryan’s WM win with bitterness of how hard we had to work to get it.

Rumble 2015: Since Reigns is pegged to win it, and it’s in smark town Philly, he’ll get a bad reaction, but I think since Bryan’s in the Rumble, the pressure and focus is taken off him, so it won’t nearly be half as bad. Just brace yourself, tonight’s gonna be another #FuckyouBritain! I think we all gotta accept Cena and Reigns are gonna win, set those expectations low so we can’t be disappointed!

If you missed it, here’s my new Tough Enough S1 Eps 5-6-7 review and OSW update![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

  • Tough Enough S1 Episodes 5-6-7

    Tough Enough S1 Episodes 5-6-7

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]We’re back with 3 more Tough Enough episodes!

    Pilot review: OSWreview.com/tough-enough-pilot
    Episodes 2-3-4 review: OSWreview.com/tough-enough-s1e2-3-4

To recap, Triple H’s speech causes Jason (the most ripped guy) to quit, Daryl’s clothes smell & he can’t wear his shorts with the big hole in it, Victoria & Bobbie Joe decide to quit together and Maven sandbags any house drama being positive and professional.

EPISODE 5 “Dispatching Darryl” featuring Pat Patterson[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]TE105-0 TE105-2 TE105-5[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]• More bumping! They show the trainees worst bumps, it’s hilarious. Later Daryl struggles with basic drills, and flinches/half-bumps on a hip-toss landing on his ear. Nasty. He’s a huge dude though, said to be 325lbs.
    • PAT PATTERSON! PAYDAY! Ach, it’s a gimmick episode, to buy & make dinner for Pat.
    • Daryl is a cheap-ass and argues ponying up $8 for dinner. This guy’s gold.
    • We get an extended DVD extra of Pat’s anecdotes. Unfortunately they have unlevelated lower echoey audio, it’s annoying – and so bad it needed subtitles.
    • Daryl loses a darts game and has to do push-ups.
    • DVD extra: Tori brings the group to do yoga. It’s death. Tori speaks without confidence.
    • Oddly they push Taylor not quitting since she’s nothing to go back to, but later she quips that (Tough Enough) was “so what I needed”
    • After all the dropouts, this is their first cut – Daryl. Contestants are informed via hanging in their locker, which is a bit of a bitch move. Surely a confrontational atmos with the trainers would be good TV?
The DVD extras made the episode it’s worst yet. The gang have a little fun at Daryl’s expense, he was the most interesting guy there. Wonder how the show’ll do without him.

    EPISODE 6 “Tears Idle Tears”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]TE106-1 TE106-3 TE106-7[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]• The gang visit a tranny restaurant/night club. Maven dresses up and that’s it.
    • Josh HATES watching wrestling with others; was annoyed someone criticised a bump taken. Gosh he’d hate me!
    • Shadrick and Chris Ni (the Josh look-a-like) are faring poorly with bumps and arm drags. The show barely features those doing well (Maven, Chris, Nidia).
    • It’s cut time, and Shad gets fired. Jackie takes his failure hard, crying twice over it.
Boring episode. The worst episode of the season, made to fill time.

EPISODE 7 “A No-Win-Ski Situation” with Kurt Angle[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]TE107-1 TE107-3 TE107-5[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]• Al Snow tells a trainee “You’re not impressing me by continuing to do these things when you’re actually injured”. Yeah, save it for the main roster!
    • It’s KURT ANGLE! It’s hilarious to see Josh’s deer-in-headlights as he catches a glimpse of Kurt whilst doing jumping jacks.
    • He gives a speech mostly as a DVD extra: He was told pro-wrestling was fake, a con to tarnish his gold medals. He mentioned being served & ripping up a 10-year multi-million dollar deal. (He did sign an 8-year deal). Angle’s very humble and talks about earning respect. He freely mentions not having paid the same dues as other superstars and rising quickly but the trainers say he paid his dues in other ways & still paid them. He doesn’t over-train; as not to wear yourself out before you get in the ring. He does half hour of intense cardio and an hour weight training almost every day; his training is geared for looks rather than strength.
    • Pauline gets mailed a CT scan. Why I’ve no idea because she can’t interpret it. She looks like she’s reading a foreign treasure map.
    • The gang go the Bahamas (real reality TV filler). Nowinski outs himself as a bit of a dick and a bully. He explains his annoyance at how goofy and unprofessional everyone else is outside the ring, especially Josh & his $1 wooden flute (which is quite hilarious hearing the noise from it)
    • After visiting her doctor, Pauline is told she’s got a partially torn lateral ligament, partially broken the top of her femur and a knee sprain.
    • The next day, Paulina withdraws. Lots of hugs and crying as she leaves, it’s a funny sight as she’s SO much taller than most of everyone.
Angle’s speech was a great listen but other than that, bust. Bring back Daryl!

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]WOOT! TOUGH ENOUGH will return in 2015! Vinnie Mac tweeted it out on Thursday. Hopefully whoever wins fares better than Angry Andy Levine. Remember him? Of course you don’t. He was shit-canned after Vince blew up at him for mis-selling a stunner & slap. As well as his only talent is being tall. He’s the cousin of Dan Spivey and still works for WWC in Puerto Rico.

So why not catch up on some 2001 Tough Enough!

    Casting Pilot Review here! OSWreview.com/tough-enough-pilot

EPISODE 2 “Welcome to the Jungle”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]TE102-1 TE102-2 TE102-3[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]• The first proper episode (the pilot was the casting session). The gang get start their training and their trainers, specifically drill sergeant Taz. Jason (the jakked guy) noted in an interview this year that during training, they all hated seeing Taz come to the house because he worked them so hard.
    • Bump drills! Horrible horrible bump drills. Victoria keeps banging her head and her resolve to be a wrestler is bit shaken.
    • Nowinski is best prepared being a fit ex-footballer with 3-6 months of wrestling training. Tori chastises him for explaining foot positions the non-WWF way.
    • One of the guys has a Goldberg poster up, which Taz tears down saying “wrong company”.
    • Bit of tussling in pig mud, where Jason and Paulina hurt her knee.
    • Daryl’s already making excuses about being sick. Taz chews him out for being out of shape, it’s a little funny.
Decent, Taz &Daryl are the highlights of an easily digestible 22m.

EPISODE 3 “Jason Crumbles” with Triple H[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]TE103-3 TE103-2b TE103-5[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]• Just like episode 2, Josh Matthews is always the first in the door to the training facility.
    • Oh shit, it’s Triple H! More bumping drills: Aitch has to tell Daryl one of his nuts is hanging out as he’s got a big hole in his shorts. Died.
    • This is the episode with THAT Triple H speech, it’s still excellent – heartfelt, stern and very real. About respecting the business; “you either want it or you don’t; and if you don’t, don’t waste our fuckin’ time.”
    • In a DVD extra, we get quite the full speech, where H chews them out over that Goldberg poster; initially praising his athleticism but saying he can’t wrestle more than 4 minutes, had his fame handed to him and has no heart for wrestling (calling in sick when he can). The detraction is the obnoxious 90s freeform camerawork zooming and panning to get multiple shots in one swoop.
    • Some fun 2001 technology – corded landlines and discmans. It might air in 2001 but the house was furnished in the 90s, brah!
    • We get a lot of Nidia talking, it’s terrible – she ‘dissects’ her feelings towards Chris and gives us the idiot line “Big offered to take us out, so we had to suck it up and look pretty”. JAYSUS.
    • It’s mentioned that Daryl is the oldest at 25. As a consequence of Triple H’s speech, Jason (the most ripped guy) quits.
This episode is a must-watch for the Triple H segment (and Daryl’s nut); nothing’s gonna top this episode.

EPISODE 4 “If You Can’t Stand the Heat” with Stephanie McMahon[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]TE104-5 TE104-6 TE104-8[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]• At Trax (The training facility), blonde Victoria looks dangerous in the ring, and Daryl’s clothes smell (he can’t wear his shorts with the big hole in it). Amazing. This guy makes for great TV.
    • After the training session, everyone’s knees have nasty contusions.
    • Victoria and Bobbie Jo decide to quit together. Wow, the women left have a 3 in 1 chance of winning. Tall Paulina keeps doubting her resolve, she’ll quit soon…So it’s really between Nidia and Taylor (whom we almost never see). Slam bloody dunk, Nidia!
    • There’s a candle “fire” in the house which seemed like cheap heat. Ba dum tish!
    • Stephanie McMahon takes the girls out for lunch. She gets over how important that everyone’s like family and how funny the roster is, especially Aitch. She’s really her father’s daughter! Steph came off very well here.
    • Since Al Snow has a match on Smackdown, the team are treated to front row seats. Fucking stacked roster of 2001! Austin, Rock, Taker, Kane, HHH Benoit, Jericho (not to mention Angle, Hardyz etc).
    • Maven responds to in-house drama in a very positive and professional manner, so the cameras don’t spend much time with him (i.e. you’ll go far in the show). If they focus on you, you’re gonna be out.
Apart from Daryl’s clothes smelling there wasn’t too much fun, it was a stop-gap to to weed out the quitters so now we can really begin.

  • NJPW’s WrestleKingdom 9

    NJPW’s WrestleKingdom 9

    NJPW WK9c

I feel it’s fair warning to state that I’m an American wrestling (WWF/WCW) fan, not a Puro fan. I watched it for about 4 years 07-11 and fell out after getting my fill of in-ring and not what I needed character/promo/storyline-wise, and just picking & choosing big matchups since. So this is my first full PPV since.

IT’S TIME…FOR YOUR LATE, OUT OF DATE, NJPW WRESTLEKINGDOM 9 REVIEW!
(Yes, that was a WrestlingJesus reference. He’s hilarious). Thanks to wrestling-giffer for the gifs!

It’s January 4, 2015 at the Toyko Dome, it’s Wrestle Kingdom 9! I love the arena setup, it looks like a huge event and there’s 36,000 fans, proving the product they’re making is successful on a large-scale basis. I’m really happy NJPW are doing so well.

Commentators: English PPV version, Matt Striker & JR.
First time they work together, and JR’s first call since RAW Jan 14th 2013 (Cena/Ziggler in a cage) but sure he hasn’t been properly commentating since Oct 2009. I was impressed at Striker’s obvious knowledge and passion for NJPW; it was hilarious that JR admonished him for using smark terms (eg “swerve” – Omega “lied” to the fans!). It’s odd that the colour guy knows more than the play-by-play but fans want to hear JR call it, not Striker. I actually thought they were in a booth in America calling it but they were flown out to attend live, although they were never prominent on camera (as it was the Japan feed). Cameras should’ve said hello at the start of the PPV! You don’t need them to call the match (in-ring is a simple story) but getting you to care about characters and storylines is the main point (IMO). They did a decent job of it. Starting off, JR felt quite rusty (he stopped everything to run down through his cheat sheet during every entrance) but Striker was able to sprinkle information more naturally during the bouts. They both found their groove together as the night progressed (increasing in quality, much like match quality in a NJPW PPV) and by the main event he was enthralling, stepping it up at the perfect moments like only JR does. I think he’s a great gateway guy to get American fans to check out more New Japan.

4 Way Tag for the IWJP Jr Tag belts
    Bucks' Meltzer Driver (aka

reDRagon (Bobby Fish/Kyle O’Reilly) (c) retained against Forever Hooligans (Alex Koslov/Rocky Romero), Time Splitters (Alex Shelley/Kushida) and Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson). Lots of people and not much time (13 minutes for 8 people) so was an unmemorable tag match. When I say that I mean relative to NJPW, they still do a lot of fast tag-team moves way more inventive than you’ll see in a WWE ring, kinda like a videogame, punctuated by the Buck’s “Meltzer Driver”. It’s great to see Shelly and he’s had some great matches last year but he didn’t do much here.

    6-Man Tag
    Jarrett's WCW theme hits

Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima and Tomoaki Honma def. Bullet Club members Bad Luck Fale, Jeff Jarrett and Yujiro Takahashi. I know it’s “Fah-lay” but “Bad Luck Fail” is much funnier! An awkward affair, I love Jarrett but he felt like a real anachronism, using the breakaway guitar in 2015 feels like a step backwards. Faces win in 5:35. Blah.

    8-Man Tag
    Izuka

Mikey Nicholls, Naomichi Marufuji, Shane Haste and Toru Yano defeated Suzukigun (Davey Boy Smith, Jr., Lance Archer, Shelton X Benjamin and Takashi Iizuka). Damn, what’s with these multi-man matches! And the massive scrolling text on the titantron during matches, it’s distracting! Taka Michinoku & Taichi came out with DH Smith and the lads. Taka’s aged really well! Sadly we only dipped in with Shelton & Davey Boy Jr so again it wasn’t anything special. Hilariously moves jolt JR to mention something he remembered from his notes (eg a Headbutt – he likes headbutts!) JR studied tapes for weeks but sure, it’d take longer to sound fluent in it. If he doesn’t know the name of a move, he’ll say “great athleticism!”. For the time given to study I thought he did an excellent job though. The match was a bit disjointed, lasts 5 minutes and not a big response from the crowd but it was fine.

Really oddly, there’s no break between matches. WWE/TNA fans will assume there’s backstage/in-ring interviews etc but it’s generally straight into the next match, no breathing room. I actually felt you need a break, it’s a 4 hour show! NJPW needed to stick to 4 hours on PPV, so they cut down on the elaborate entrances and faffing about, for better or worse. They did have video packages, sometimes in English but mostly in Japanese (I get that English feed is like 10% of the audience but it would’ve been nice if JR voiced it). Alright, the business-end of WK9 is coming up 🙂

UWFI Rules match: Minoru Suzuki vs Kazushi Sakuraba

Whaa? No pins, MMA style matchup; ends in submission or KO. STEVE! WHAT BAR is Sakuraba? Well Jay, he is wearing a little orange and PARPLE! purple ditty so he…is a double decker.
Something you’ll never see in WWE (outside of Lesnar), different styles of wrestling. This one is a worked MMA match. What’s the point of a worked MMA match? Ask UFC! HIYOOOOO 😀 I wonder if this type of thing interests MMA fans. They wrestle to the ground and work for positions and submissions, but since it tries to be more real, it’s more obvious that it’s a work, if that makes sense. They obviously help each other (let me get into your guard, let’s walk out to the ramp, keep the rear naked choke on despite it slipping off). It’s quite a spectacle and the uniqueness is really refreshing though. They kick, elbow and slap the shit out of each other, it’s a stiff match. Suzuki kayfabe injures his arm and Sakuraba doesn’t press him over it to finish him (agh! RASSLIN!) continuing to go for body shots despite Suzuki not defending himself, opting to hold his left wrist. We get a pro-wrestling end of the idiot who won’t finish off an injured opponent gets caught with a worked rear naked choke. Suzuki wins in 9:21. A cool idea but it’s the uncanny valley of wrestling; so close to a shoot it shows it’s a work.

NEVER Openweight title match: Togi Makabe (aka JUNKYARD JAP!) vs PITBULL ISHII

Strong Style! Two lads of great girth kick off with slobbenly, shouty, hard-hitting brawling, wildly swinging at each other. Felt JR was gonna break out a “bowling shoe ugly” reference in the opening exchanges. On-screen hash tags are even bigger in Japan. Commentators reference Bruiser Brody a lot. The ref constantly changes position and so walks in front of camera a few times in a row, boo. They don’t walk around much, but they knock lumps out each other, as the match builds up to some nice spots, including a top rope Samoan drop, dragon suplex and top rope knee drop. Makabe wins it in what was quite enjoyable by the end. This felt like a match where “we can’t do X, X and X.” “What can we do?” “Elbow each other in the neck”. ALRIGHTY YEAH! It was likely the best match they could have so good stuff.

IWGP Jr Heavyweight title match: KENNY OMEGA VS TAGUCHI

Bullet Club’s Omega looks great – he’s much bigger than I last saw him, and his white hair is weird. He looks like a cross between Pillman and Chuck Palumbo (which is awesome). Very cool jacket. He’s out with the Young Bucks. I like how the Bullet Club members have a logo but have their own unique gear, as opposed to masses of just black tees. Taguchi’s “Funky Weapon” moniker is incredible. Loved his tag team with Devitt. He uses the flying bum tackle, which is winner. JR drops a “Wild Pegasus” (Benoit) reference. Stryker mentions Omega shaved his arms so the stubble growing in is used to grind against his opponent’s eyes. AMAZING KAYFABE. He’s called “the cleaner” which reminds me of Tough Enough 1 tryout guy “The Evil Custodian”. JR calls Omega a journeyman. Does that mean something else in Japan? (it means ‘gimmicked jobber’ in America eg The Goon, Duke Drose etc). Love Omega’s offense; from the deadlift powerbomb to the great flurryed finish, top stuff. The Evil Custodian wins the title in 13:20 in a very entertaining, smooth, great workrate match. Fan of both these lads.

IWGP Tag Title Match: MEIYU TAG (HIROOKI GOTO & KATSUYORI SHIBATA def BULLET CLUB’S DOC GALLOWS & KARL ANDERSON

I don’t rate Doc & Machine Gun Karl, they are the poster boys of Japanese promotions hiring the “large boring American”. Hate the “too sweet” moniker and hand signal nWo rip-off (what’s wrong with the finger gun to the head?) and the relatively elderly Bullet Babe is really 90s. In general I do like the Bullet Club though, and their t-shirt is the coolest modern tee out there. JR and Striker didn’t really care for the match either, immediately calling the title change to “a taste of things to come perhaps”. Anyway, Anderson’s definitely the better of the two and they don’t mess anything up, and I guess it’s there to give you a breather between the last and the next match. The faces Goto & Shibata win the titles in 9 minutes in an instantly forgettable match. When I see the American lads I keep thinking they can’t wait to get head out and get free dinner and drinks by a sponsor afterwards!

    AJ STYLES VS TETSUYA NAITO

It’s here that JR ashamedly just blandly powers through his notes, reaming off dozens of wrestlers’ names. Jaysus! He calls Styles the “master of the Styles Clash”, he’s obviously not! Main story of the match is Naito (aka “Stardust Genius” – amazing) countering the Styles Clash, which JR and Striker excellently put over as a legit dangerous move. Lots of great, high flying moves but big spots aren’t the smoothest, fumbling through a couple of them. In the end, Naito takes a very safe 2nd turnbuckle Styles clash and AJ wins it in an entertaining 14:25. It felt like both men had trouble communicating, or weren’t on the same page – so the match is still very good but disappointingly sloppy considering the talent of both lads.

Oh shit, there’s 1hr 25 left in the PPV with 2 matches left. Holy shit, strap yourselves in!

IWGP Intercontinental Title Match: KOTA IBUSHI (aka Purple KENTA) vs SHINSUKE NAKAMURA (c)

Isn’t Nakamura the best? JR says he’s a Freddie mercury and Michael Jackson devotee. Dressed in cape jacket and crown, with a haircut like The Hound. What a guy! Very cool to hear Nakamura has some MMA fights – the lads start off with some kickboxing feel-outs. Very different, foot-oriented. I love how this PPV has different styles of matches. Perfect moonsault to the outside and standing shooting star. Oddly JR takes a shot at WWE by saying “the IWGP IC title is as coveted as the world title, why would you want a title that isnt.” Em, obviously that’s bollocks because the world title goes on last and the world champ makes the most money. Wrestling is not like the UFC in this regard. Wouldn’t every belt be identical then, like UFC? We get punches into a lovely arm bar. Nasty running knee to the face, no sell kick out at 1. Ibushi mockingly kicks at Nakamura. JR keeps pushing the young boy (Ibushi) vs veteran angle; Ibushi crossing weight divisions, growing up. Jesus he’s been pro how long? (Since 2004) It’s like when TNA call Styles “the future” ten years after his debut! I’m not getting over how excellent this match was, and it told a great simple story of getting behind Ibushi to get his big win, but Nakamura throws everything at him and survives his own signature moves. Nakamura hits the “what a great match” (as JR calls it) and big boot to win and gets the three in 20:12. It felt like a bit of a surprise considering the big moves before it, so a bit of an anticlimax. Really great match though! A big match feel, relentless, the wrestlers were both proving themselves to each other. Awesome.

IWGP TITLE: ‘RAINMAKER’ KAZUCHIKA OKADA VS HIROSHI TANAHASHI (c)

Before we start, I still cringe at how badly TNA dropped the ball with these two guys. I’d never heard of either before they came to TNA but could see they’re talented, especially Tanahashi, who looks like a Final Fantasy Character, basically Japan’s Shawn Michaels. One jobbed clean in minutes in opening matches and the other was the Samoa Joe’s Green Hornet butler. This is their 7th big match against each other, all of which have been highly rated. These lads have excellent in-ring chemistry and are both very talented. As such the fans cheer heel Okada too. Slow to start off, you know this match will go long! Lovey High Fly Flow (frog splash) by Tanahashi to the outside over a barrier, 2 more in ring, then an X7-style kicking out of the rainmaker. JR marks hard to a dropkick (which was weird and awesome, it is a nice dropkick!) The crowd are emotionally invested and the match is feels like a huge deal, and they rise to it. Tashi’s high workrate finish is tops, winning after a perfect High Fly Flow in 30:57. Then he celebrates with some air guitar, which is also fun. Excellent match-up!

Overall, the first half was faff, but I really enjoyed the 2nd half. I hate to say it could’ve used some filler but in a four hour show, I wouldn’t mind a quick breather. It’s difficult to keep me personally vested in Japanese wrestling as promos, characters and storylines are what interest me, but they’re done in Japanese, and isn’t the focus/draw of NJPW. In-ring however, New Japan provide some world-class, untouchable matches. I hope that’s fair enough. Recommend checking the 2nd half out.

  • Macho Man: The Randy Savage Story

Macho Man: The Randy Savage Story

    [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Savae_

Macho Man: The Randy Savage Story is a 94-minute documentary about the big moments in the career of the Macho Man. Notably absent is Macho’s later WWF career (especially vs Warrior at WM7) and they gloss over his entire WCW career besides his feud with DDP. It’s still a fun docu even if it’s quite superficial. Here’s some notes I’ve taken during it:

    • Baseball career: They’re extremely complimentary about it, being picked out of highschool as a catcher for the St. Louis Cardials; he injured his right shoulder so never made it out of the minor leagues.
    • The name: Randy got the nickname “Macho Man” from getting into fights in highschool (other sources say his mom heard it and told him) and “Savage” was from Ole Anderson.
    • The promos: There’s a quick montage with Macho’s classic promos with Mean Gene which is the best thing about the special.
    • His outfits: DDP & Macho’s seamstress chat about how they hide/project a larger size like a peacock; that he’d stand on his tip-toes to gain a few inches. Good stuff.
    • Jake Roberts’ one contribution is hilarious, that Macho had “dry cleaned hair”
    • Elizabeth: After getting over how pretty she is, WWE’s talking heads spend an inordinate amount of time hammering home how insanely covetist Randy was of his wife Elizabeth. Like they go back to it a few times. “Nobody had the chance to get with her because she was under lock and key” Jimmy Hart notes. It’s quite he-said-she-said but Hogan & Linda apparently ‘harboured’ Liz when they were going through difficulties and that made it worse. Only his brother Lanny defends him, rebuttling everyone else’s claims, but although I agree with him, he becomes quickly annoying.
    • WrestleMania III: Ricky Steamboat mentions their match was scripted by Randy move for move. (It’s hilarious that they cut to B-roll of a written list of moves). I wonder if Steamer’s a little sad that he had no input in what’s remembered as his greatest match.
    • WrestleMania IV: They say it’s an amazing 1-night performance (don’t watch this PPV! it’s a 4 hour 16-match death by time limit draws!)
    • WrestleMania V: MegaPowers breakup (arguably the greatest storyline in history) just a cursory glance but hits all the right points.
    • Pretty much nothing showcasing WrestleMania VI (Dusty), VII (Warrior) and little about VIII (Flair). They use WrestleMania 8’s WWF magazine Scandal pictures as B-roll for Savage & Liz, which is hilarious.
    • Interestingly they show Savage’s only official mention of his divorce from WWF Magazine.
    • WWE get great use of one sit-down interview in 1993, it’s the “Bischoff interview in front of the 2003 RAW set” of this docu.
    • Slim Jim: A quick talking head segment with PR guys from Slim Jim, I’ve never seen some of the footage, it’s cool, showing Macho’s dedication to get things perfectly right, repeating many takes.
    • Macho as a New Generation commentator: I’m still annoyed about it. Feuds with Bret, Shawn etc would’ve benefited enormously. One of Vince’s biggest mistakes. There’s two positives to having a legitimate main event draw on the team – making money on PPV and making other stars. Having him on headset did neither.
    • WCW: So Randy went down South so he could wrestle & make more money. “Vince McMahon was most personally affected by macho man’s departure.” Oh fuck you!
    • Nacho Man: Lanny remarks he was very upset by the “Billionaire Ted” skits that including an aged Macho Man, they mention tension with Hogan and straight into making DDP, who is extremely grateful.
    • Team Madness: By 1999 Macho had athletically declined so he surrounded himself by as much gimmickry (i.e. hot women) as he could.
    • Stephanie McMahon: All WWE have is a throwaway acknowledgement without any explanation “it added fuel on the fire”…. “his inexplicable banishment” and that’s it. It’s only a few seconds long.
    • Elizabeth’s death: Christ, they splice in Luger’s 911 call. Bad form.
    • Macho’s death: By the end, they were really hurting for b-roll, lots of stock footage and pictures – cheap and digitally put together, as opposed to when they film those framed photos in a nice studio set for other DVDs and The Monday Night Wars. They mention how he’d just remarried to this highschool sweetheart and was happy.
    • They only ever mention in passing Macho Man’s on-screen and real life feuds with Hogan (they were basically only civil when money could be made). Did you know? Hogan has the last words on the Macho DVD, saying no-one will ever be as Macho as the Macho Man.

Overall: Combined with short running time, the cursory glance and power director show-reel, it makes it feel like a slap-dashed docu. A fun watch and an introduction to Macho, but don’t buy it, wait for it to come on the Network. I’d recommend the Macho Madness Ultimate Collection instead (even if there’s no docu, there’s tons of matches and some stellar promos too). Or just watch WrestleMania V instead![/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”flexslider_fade” interval=”10″ images=”2356,2357,2358,2359,2360,2361,2362,2363,2382,2365,2366,2383,2367,2368,2369,2370,2371,2372,2373,2374,2375,2376,2377,2378,2379,2380,2381″ onclick=”link_no” custom_links_target=”_self” img_size=”full”]tricker[/vc_gallery][/vc_column][/vc_row]

  • Tough Enough Pilot

    Tough Enough Pilot

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]1f 3 7c[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]WWE will release Tough Enough S1 from 2001 on the WWE Network Monday afternoon. It’s the DVD version, containing extended footage and without end credits, apart from the finale, which is the TV version and missing Vince interviewing the finalists. Here\’s a review of the double-episode pilot!

From over 4,000 audition tapes, WWF invite 230 to try out at their New York restaurant. They judge their physique and conditioning, see how they deal with questions/prodding and their promo ability. This episode is the best and the worst of that. The judges call back 25 finalists, and choose their final 13 to be on the Tough Enough reality show.

    Thoughts on the show:
    • This casting premiere is a 44-minute (double episode), with 14 episodes total (the next 13 are recorded over 9 weeks), aired June-September 2001.
    • At the 230-person tryout are Al Snow, Tazz, Jacquelline, Mick Foley, producer John “Big” Gaburick, Kevin Dunn, and MTV producers. Even if they could get people in and out in 2 minutes that’d take almost 8 hours. Foley is barely featured and is not a trainer (that’s Al Snow, Tazz, Jacqueline and Tori, from X-Pac and Tori’s Christmas Story)
    • Hey look – it’s EVP of TV Production, Kevin Dunn! Or as Jim Cornette calls him, “you fucking Bucky-Beaver motherfucker”
    • Al Snow runs down what they’re looking for: Charisma, determination, dedication, personality, energy and most importantly, physique.
    • Despite that last one (which in WWE, IS the most important) some were joke auditions for the cameras (eg really overweight fellas).
    • Tazz calls himself 5’9″, 240 lbs. That’s just garbage, lol – he’s like 5’4″. He says he’ll fight for guys perceived as too small, and intentionally riles the contestants up to see how they conduct themselves.
    • Josh Matthews is the first audition tape seen and is shown waiting in line to register, pretty cool.
    • There’s a jakked dude who’s “just recently fallen in love”. Really staged, his girlfriend says “I love you”, and candidly he tells WWF that “I love having emotions”. AMAZING. That’s something Always Sunny’s Dennis would say.
    • #56 has crib-notes on her wrist, Rock-style. Amazing.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]12 12bb 16[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]• Maven – immediately earmarked for success. “He looks like a kid in a pro-wrestling school”, “he reminded me a lot of Kurt Angle.”
    • Daryl. I remember this guy. He forgot to wash his ass during the show. Even though he’s out of shape, since he’s 6’7″ and a hefty dude, he makes the final cut. An MTV exec describes him as “really intelligent, that has a lot to say about what’s going on the world” which is hilarious bullshit, the best he could think of on the spot. They’ve high hopes for him.
    • Kenneth from Rhode Island is a custodian, whose gimmick is “The Evil Custodian”. He kicks off his promo with “nobody likes the custodian” deadpan serious, which breaks the lads instantly.
    • Chris Nowinski mentions Harvard and has a quick, very positive pow-wow with the lads, he’ll make the finals (and he does).
    • Woah! It’s ODB! She calls herself One Dirty Bitch. She makes the 2nd round but ultimately not chosen.
    • Nidia says she was a dancer for 2 months. From her explanation “the only ones to see you dance are those who pay. You go to the booth, do your little thing and get up”. Woah, you mean stripper (or at least, exotic dancer)
    • When it comes down to the final 13, Kevin Dunn is seen giving a lot more input. Despite the front of the trainers, he’s the guy you really gotta impress.
    • MTV exec says “(Guy/gal off the street) could be a wrestler”. It’s not an exclusive club, you can join a wrestling school! Only took WWE about 7 years after this but they did learn the best talent are already wrestlers, who’ve already shown the dedication by working the indies or overseas, who don’t need MTV to prod them into this career path.
    • Everyone seems very high on 6’3″ Paulina. She seems nice and sounds just like Chyna.
    • Along with ODB, 2 notable contestants didn’t make the final cut; Tara (not the wrestler, but a charming, tiny girl) and Jackie Gayda, who made TE 2.
    • Finalist Tom refused to sign an MTV contract so last-minute was replaced by ex-footballer Greg Whitmoyer.
    • They end the show with the finalists unpacking in the Tough Enough house in Stamford.
    • Aitch was a noted critic of the show for exposing the business (eg showing how people bump) and he’d put the fear of God into them in episode 3, with an excellent speech about dedication to WWF.

Overall, it’s an easy watch and cool to go back to the height of WWF. MTV’s reality show production is quite 90’s and I’d consider Steve Austin’s 2011 reboot to be superior, but the novelty alone of watching regular people trying to become wrestlers is worth it.

Even if they could get people in and out in 2 minutes that\’d take almost 8 hours. Foley is barely featured and is not a trainer (that\’s Al Snow, Tazz, Jacqueline and Tori, from X-Pac and Tori\’s Christmas Story)
    • Hey look – it\’s EVP of TV Production, Kevin Dunn! Or as Jim Cornette calls him, “you fucking Bucky-Beaver motherfucker”
    • Al Snow runs down what they\’re looking for: Charisma, determination, dedication, personality, energy and most importantly, physique.
    • Despite that last one (which in WWE, IS the most important) some were joke auditions for the cameras (eg really overweight, windy fellas).
    • Tazz calls himself 5\’9″, 240 lbs. That\’s just garbage, lol – he\’s like 5\’4″. He says he\’ll fight for guys perceived as too small, and intentionally riles the contestants up to see how they conduct themselves.
    • Josh Matthews is the first audition tape seen and is shown waiting in line to register, pretty cool. He\’s also the first chosen as a finalist. He may be the smallest male contestant there.
    • There\’s a jakked dude who\’s “just recently fallen in love”. Really staged, his girlfriend says “I love you”, and candidly he tells WWF that “I love having emotions”. AMAZING. That\’s something Always Sunny\’s Dennis would say.
    • #56 has crib-notes on her wrist, Rock-style. Amazing.
    • Maven – immediately earmarked for success. Al Snow comments he looks like a kid in a pro-wrestling school, Kevin Dunn remarks “he reminded me a lot of Kurt Angle.”
    • Daryl. I remember this guy. He forgot to wash his ass during the show. Even though he\’s out of shape, since he\’s 6\’7″ and a hefty dude, he makes the final cut. An MTV exec describes him as “really intelligent, that has a lot to say about what\’s going on the world” which is hilarious bullshit, the best he could think of on the spot. They\’ve high hopes for him.
    • Kenneth from Rhode Island is a custodian, whose gimmick is “The Evil Custodian”. He kicks off his promo with “nobody likes the custodian” which breaks the lads instantly.
    • Chris Nowinski mentions Harvard and has a quick, very positive pow-wow with the lads, he\’ll make the finals (and he does).
    • Woah! It\’s ODB! She calls herself One Dirty Bitch. She makes the 2nd round but ultimately not chosen.
    • Nidia says she was a dancer for 2 months. From her explanation “the only ones to see you dance are those who pay. You go to the booth, do your little thing and get up”. Woah, you mean stripper.
    • When it comes down to the final 13, Kevin Dunn is seen giving a lot more input. Despite the front of the trainers, he\’s the guy you really gotta impress.
    • MTV exec says “(Guy/gal off the street) could be a wrestler”. It\’s not an exclusive club, you can join a wrestling school! Only took WWE about 7 years but they did learn the best talent are already wrestlers, who\’ve already shown the dedication by working the indies or overseas, who don\’t need MTV to prod them into this career path.
    • Everyone seems very high on 6\’3″ Paulina. She seems nice and has a sounds just like Chyna.
    • Along with ODB, 2 notable contestants didn\’t make the final cut; Tara (not the wrestler, but a charming, tiny girl, who upon seeing the other girls, stuffed her bra with toilet paper) and Jackie Gayda, who made Tough Enough 2.
    • Finalist Tom refused to sign an MTV contract so last-minute was replaced by ex-footballer Greg Whitmoyer.
    • They end the show with the finalists unpacking in the Tough Enough house in Stamford.
    • Aitch was a noted critic of the show for exposing the business (showing how people bump) and he\’d put the fear of God into them in episode 3, with an excellent speech about dedication to WWF.

Overall, it\’s an easy watch and it\’s cool to go back to the height of WWF. MTV\’s reality show production is quite 90s but the novelty alone of watching regular people trying to become wrestlers is worth a watch.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SEASON 1 CONTESTANTS?
Josh Lomberger (Josh Matthews) did the best out of everyone, getting a long-time gig in WWE as a backstage reporter & commentator on their C-shows, now the lead announcer for TNA.
Jason Dayberry quit early on due to the rough road schedule. He\’s a pro bodybuilder now.
Bobbie Jo Anderson & Victoria Tabor quit together due to the physicality.
Maven Huffman won Tough Enough S1, and is best known for eliminating the Undertaker at the 2002 Rumble (which was an amazing, shocking spot). He was D-Von\’s best friend in the business and was released by WWE in 2005. He worked on the indies and was seen selling things on the Home Shopping Network. He\’s a NY bouncer now.
Taylor Matheny married Brian Kendrick, works as Make Up Artist in Hollywood.
Chris Nowinski quit wrestling after suffering post-concussion syndrome, and now is the exec director at the Sports Legacy Institute, a concussion research group.
Shadrick McGee was cut due to poor in-ring performance.
Chris Nifong was nicknamed “CK” (Career Killer”) after he injured Tori with a botched hip toss. He\’s now a graphic designer and screen printer.
Paulina Thomas was TNA\’s bodyguard for Disco Inferno for a 2 shows in 2002 and is now a Product & Market Manager in NY.
Nidia Guenard, the female winner of Tough Enough S1, best known for her Smackdown gig as Jamie Noble\’s trashy girlfriend. Now works in culinary arts.
Darryl Cross is now a web graphic designer in Iowa
Greg Whitmoyer didn\’t get a contract and worked for hardcore indie company CZW and a few 3PW dates.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”flexslider_fade” onclick=”link_image” custom_links_target=”_self”]tricker[/vc_gallery][vc_column_text]WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SEASON 1 CONTESTANTS?

    NXT Takeover: R Evolution

    [vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hr5YcdNPmdo”][vc_column_text]

    Date: December 11, 2014
    Venue: Full Sail University (Florida)
Attendance: 400 (free admission for FSU students)
Commentators: Rich Brennan, Alex Riley and Corey Graves (who announced his official in-ring retirement due to concussion issues and his new spot on commentary)

KEVIN OWENS (KEVIN STEEN) vs CJ PARKER
KO’s out first! Awesome to finally see him in WWE, STATE of his ring gear though! Cut-off tee, long shorts and high boots look awful! He’s lost a lot of weight from even joining NXT, good stuff.Straight out of the 80s, the babyface sends the hippie heel packing after two clotheslines and a running cannonball. Crowd fucking flip out for KO’s plancha to the outside. He landed hard on the ramp, ow! Since that’s the only area where there’s a bit of space around the ring, every match has some kind of plancha/tope out onto the ramp. It’s difficult/more awkward to chant Owens gonna kill you and fight Owens fight, since it’s 2 syllables, but the crowd do it well. Palm strike by CJ actually busts Steen’s nose, and a slightly bloody face looks great. Ref gets on the latex-allergy gloves but Owen just does a pop-up powerbomb and gets the 3 in 3:14. Like an Irish mammy the ref forces himself to clean KO’s nose. A short, strong debut showcasing Steen – huge huge potential and faith shown.

NXT TAG TITLES: LUCHA DRAGONS (Kalisto & Sin Cara) (c) vs VAUDVILLAINS (Aiden English & Simon Gotch)
Big fan of the complete anarchonism, turn of the century carny tough-men, and their 1920’s film style vignettes. However their theme is now more downbeat heel, their entrance now has an annoying stutter and Aiden especially seems to have completely dropped the pretense, while Gotch keeps it up. I love how their outfits are high contrast to look great in black and white (Gotch’s boots are magic). We get a video package of the Luchas speaking perfect english (don’t do that!) “IT FEELS INCREDIBLE WOOO!” lol. Luchas get some showcase spots before old timeys get the heat on Sin Cara. Hunico and Kalisto – about 10% of cost of Sin Cara and Mysterio. Kalisto gets the hot tag and salvages a botched roll up with a kick to the head, good save. Dragons look to perform double planchas but English pushes Gotch out of the way (gets “chivalry” chants!) but Kalisto catches Gotch with a Salida Del Sol (like a sliced bread without the use of a turnbuckle) and 3 in 6:40 to keep the belts. Have to say, Hunico’s not the best lucha – he’s a bigger guy and a bit windy, so his moves (while unbotched) are performed a bit slow. Another short, entertaining matchup, good stuff.

    TYE DILLINGER vs BARON CORBIN
Who? That’s right. Music starts with a harley revving, it’s the DOA! It’s Baron Corbin, who was a jobber until his monster heel “coming out” last NXT Special (squashing CJ Parker). A great gimmick, the fans start counting as Corbin squashes his opponent in a matter of seconds. SHAME THEY CAN’T COUNT SECONDS, THEY JUST COUNT – FUCK YOU! IT’S CESARO’S SWING ALL OVER AGAIN. They give up at 32 anyway, shame as he was literally ONE MOVE from winning. He wins in 41 seconds with the end of days (swinging reverse STO). Bull Dempsy aka Tubby Rhyno looks on from ringside. A nothing squash match but Corbin is over (with the NXT crowd, who are on top form tonight. I wish WWE produced RAW shows good enough to get this type of unfaltering love.)

We get a picture-in-picture pre-taped Sami Zayn promo getting over his match (he’ll quit if he doesn’t win), as well as seeing Zayn get in the zone in the locker-room. Of note, Steen looks at him from another bench.

THE ASCENSION (Konnor & Viktor) vs HIDEO ITAMI & FINN BALOR (KENTA & Prince Devitt)
Please bare with me if I call indy or international guys by their non-WWE name, it’s only been a few weeks under WWE vs many years by something else. Couldn’t have more contrasting teams – The Asscension are two poor, lumbering brawlers booked like big men, taking on two world class high-workrate international wrestlers. Of course, Ascension and their 90s German metal song are getting called up to RAW. Hideo looks like Scorpion in his yellow and black robe. HOLY FUCK Balor’s entrance is incredible. The smoke, seeing something inhuman with dreadlocks contorting on all fours down the ramp, what an entrance. I got goosebumps watching. Amazing. Ascension sell it well, being dumbfounded by Devitt’s body & face paint. Ascension smartly make quick tags and work over Itami. Sadly it’s resthold city with headlocks that tries it’s best to kill the crowd. Konnor throws out Balor’s feet to prevent a tag but eventually he tags in & runs wild! Plancha to the outside, misses the double foot stomp, not great curtain call slam. KENTA gets Viktor up for a GTS – the crowd know EXACTLY what it is and pop (I love smarks!) I actually gasped when he went for it, gets cut off, Devitt hits a Pele kick, KENTA hits a running single leg dropkick and they both hit a double foot stomp (KENTA was a little late) and the faces pick up the win in 11:38! This match will just be remembered for the incredible Devitt entrance and get-up. Ascension was death on offense and the international lads were magic, but obviously holding back (we’ll have to wait until their singles run to see it). Devitt’s shown as the stronger of the two by far. Great stuff.

Backstage with Renee, the ‘bitch’ man Roman Reigns says he’ll be the first NXT graduate to be WWE Champion.

NXT WOMEN’S TITLE: CHARLOTTE (c) vs SASHA BANKS
Promo package! Charlotte says “To be the woman, you gotta beat the woman.” I thought you were shying away from the Flair stuff? Also, never talk about beating women. Just steer clear. Fresh off her embarrassing clean loss in 2 minutes on raw, which was the only promotion this Special got (“come watch the losers!”). Aitch explained the horrific booking as “it is what it is”. Well done Vince. Hilariously Sasha references THE SHOGUN OF HARLEM saying she’s the meanest, the baddest and the prettiest diva in NXT. Marked out. So this is a post-group breakup feud. Weirdly this seems to be heel-heel (both are narcissistic) but Charlotte plays complete babyface in the match. Hey, JoJo (from NXT) is the announcer. She wouldn’t have to watch her bag as Randy isn’t around. Charlotte’s Flair chops are shit, don’t do them. Weird booking as tiny Sasha slowly works over giant Charlotte – I wonder if Charlotte got a knock early on. “The Boss” Sasha mocks her with a Flair strut and uses Charlotte’s head figure four. They have some nice choreographed spots that the crowd really respond to (“this is awesome”, “this is wrestling” ) Charlotte performs a top rope moonsault, lands on her feet and flips forward to get Sasha. Flair’s daughter wins via her “Natural Selection”, a top rope neck breaker and retains the title in 12:12. Charlotte did a good job as underdog babyface (but it’s not ideal), Sasha’s not as talented (someone else would’ve been preferable) but the match got better as it went on, some nice reversals, and is still miles above anything you’ll ever see on raw. Good stuff.

MAIN EVENT! NXT WORLD TITLE: ADRIAN NEVILLE (c) vs SAMI ZAYN
37 minutes left with the singles main event – HELL YEAH. Zayn’s gimmick is that he “can’t win the big one”, and face Neville has been doing increasingly heel antics to retain his belt (eg faking injuries). Zayn is a tremendous natural babyface, a rare talent. I can’t see him being showcased so well on RAW but I hope I’m wrong. That’s how I feel about NXT in general, you’ll all get Jack Swagger’d. Or “Charlotte’d”! Please prove me wrong! Commentator Graves makes a “Newcastle playing at Sunderland” allusion for Neville getting a negative reaction, which is just tops. After a springboard moonsault to the outside, Neville hesitates coming back in before the ten count (a mild heel thing to do). Neville’s in control with Zayn hitting some big time moves before being cut off – like Neville’s in an electric chair and Zayn hits a tilt a whirl power bomb, Neville replies with a throw to the ropes seemlessly into a German. Awesome. They elbow the shit out of each other, Puro style. Zayn gets the knees up on the code red and smoothly applies the Koji Clutch. We get two WONDERFUL storyline spots where Sami gets distracted. Firstly, by being a good guy (which is always his undoing): The ref and Neville bang heads, Zayn checks on the ref (the crowd and commentators shout at him no!), he gets a hurricanrana (from behind) for his troubles. Sami replies with a sweet full nelson full rotation suplex and dive through the corner ropes DDT. Heel spot as Adrian pulls the ref in to take Sami’s helluva kick (although he was a little late) and smartly rolls out to the outside to recouperate. With the ref down and Neville in ring, Sami spots the NXT title on the mat. The crowd tell him no, don’t pay attention to it, but he picks it up. He fights with himself over using it (like Piper with the ringbell v Bret at WM8) and ultimately doesn’t, escapes a school boy, hits an exploder suplex, hulluva kick and gets the three to win the NXT title in 23:17! Finally he’s rewarded for staying babyface. Hilariously over the closing bit he seems to have sworn on four different occasions as the audio cut out for a few seconds each time. The match started off easy with Adrian wear-downs and built with smooth fast paced moves to a big storyline crescendo. Excellent stuff. Wrestlers and officials celebrate in ring with Zayn, and PAT PATTERSON gets a (network) payday! Hooray! A wonderful Christmas-time culmination of Sami’s journey to the NXT title. Zayn & Neville hug (turning back babyface), and finally Kevin Owens comes out (which is nice given their history) and swerve! KO throws Sami’s head into the steel ramp and powerbomb throws him back first into the apron. Ouch! So we’re getting Generico/Steen on NXT? SPOOGE MCDUCK!

Overall, God damn. Another belter by NXT. Absolutely killed anything else WWE have to offer. Excellent, go watch it. Excited to see what’s next. Amazing.

    RAW 11TH DECEMBER, 1995 Review
From Salisbury, Maryland, taped 3 weeks prior to airing.
    TV rating: 2.5
Commentators: Vince McMahon & Jerry Lawler

Raw on the Roof intro song sucks but the video’s really cool – contains snippets later used in the DX video

    OWEN HART VS JEFF HARDY
Wow! Oh wait. It’s Jobber Jeff hardy. Owen’s wearing my favourite of his attire, two-time Slammy award winner tights. Jeff literally gets no offense. Rocket dropkicks him, decides against a sharpshooter and pins instead. Then Yokozuna squishes Jeff, “641 pounds coming down at the speed of gravity” as Vince calls it, and then Diesel runs the heels off.

    CHAPARITA ASARI VS AJA KONG
A Japanese women’s match? We’re at another peak in McMahons stop-start push for a women’s division. ASARI really looks like the red ranger/JTL. She initially fails and just repeats the Kronus chick spot which ends in a backwards dropkick. Wow, check out ref Mike Chiota’s wonderful corrugated mullet. Kong looks like a female Mabel. Fable. She hits an amazing package Piledriver (although back facing the hard camera). Lots of snapmares, lots of kicks. Her gimmick is the dominant larger woman and Asari tries to knock her down. Fucking gorgeous corkscrew moonsault (aka Vince’s “this daring manouvre”) which misses and is sandbagged by the commentators and crowd. Much like Amazing Kong, Aja Kong hits a spinning back fist, which seals the win. Damn, these ladies can wrestle, but were not over and not given featured time, and the commentators don’t care, so it’s a losing battle. They were grooming her to take on Women’s Champion Alundra Blaze but lost interest and didn’t re-sign Blaze (so she showed up in WCW with the belt instead). That was the nail in the coffin until they brought the women’s division back in 98.

SHAWN MICHAELS SIT-DOWN INTERVIEW WITH TODD PETTENGILL
Shawn (shockingly) fumbles over his words “I’m not suffering from any symptoms my doctors claim I have”. What? He dodges giving a return date and gets upset being asked about possibly retiring.

Ad for Bulldog vs Bret at this Sunday’s in your house. The Mancunian barks “YURR SCURRED, HITMAN!” (You’re scared, Hitman)

    AHMED JOHNSON VS RICK STOCKHAUSER
THE Rick Stockhauser to you, buddy. Unlike Jobber Jeff Hardy, Rick doesn’t even get an on-screen graphic, never mind an entrance or ring announcement. Inset promo with dean Douglas pimping his match with Ahmed at December’s In Your House. Sloppy spine buster and pearl river plunge (the jobber looks like a frog) and Johnson gets the win. Post match, Jerry The Mullet Lawler insults/interviews Ahmed. (he asks if the toughest 4 years of his life were the 4th grade, ha!)

Lots of non-wrestling next. Doc Hendrix hocks WWF wrestler denim jackets. Awesome. Oh man. YES. Then a Happy Holidays featuring a police lineup of WWF Santas as one of them was makin’ kids cry, brah. Next is a cool black and white RAW Bowl ad for New Years (featuring College Kane). In-ring, Vince interviews the Million Dollar Corporation, Ted DiBiase’s tag team of Sid and newly heel 123 Kid. He prognosticates the team will cut it, and be the next tag champions. Fewer predictions would be more wrong! Horrendous opening-level promos by both. Sid says they’ll enjoy beating Razor. Vince isn’t impressed.

MAIN EVENT: HAIL TO THE CHIMP! It’s Duckarse BOB BACKLUND VS BRET HART
To promote it they had a promo package replete with flu puns, Bret will inoculate him, Backlund virus etc. Stone-faced scowling Diana hart is in the crowd, Bret’s sister and Bulldog’s wife. She blankly answers Lawler’s questions like it was actually real and not entertainment. He asks about Bulldog being with heel Cornette. “I’m for Davey’s association with Jimmy Cornette because he’s the only one to get him a title shot (at Bret’s title).” Fair enough!

Bret and Backlund, what a star-studded affair! I love Bret, but the lads have a boring, countering mat-wrestling affair. Bret makes total sense of applying a waist lock, ducking hiding behind the back as Backlund looks to back elbow Bret to get out of it. Backlund takes control with multiple rest spots, repeated lying down arm bars, working the left arm with a view to a chicken wing. Two ads during this 12 minute match. Cool that they left in the ads, there’s a fair amount of them – like karate fighters and “erector” (aka ghetto mecano) Ticker at the bottom plugs Vince’s infamous AOL chat! Bret hits the closing sequence countering a slam into a body press. When about to apply the sharpshooter we get the New Generation/2014 RAW finish of a run-in and DQ. Bulldog and Backlund put the boots to Bret, until WORZEL takes command! The officials are largely ineffective so Vince calls for monsoon to see us out.

Overall, a tight 46 minutes. A easy watch, but they’re seriously hurting for star talent and decent matches. During the dark (but bright neon) days where business was way down with no way out in sight. Can’t say I’m intrigued to watch “In Your House 5: Seasons Beatings” but random RAWs are pretty cool.

  • Both Punk Interviews on the Art of Wrestling

Both Punk Interviews on the Art of Wrestling

Last week, CM Punk was on the Art of Wrestling podcast, and spoke frankly about his departure from WWE, blasting all aspects of the company. It’s tremendously refreshing to hear a top-line wrestler speak openly and candidly about WWE, just something you don’t hear – most ex-wrestlers towing the company line, just in case they wanted to do business again. It’s an incredible must-listen interview, even if you’re not a wrestling fan. Punk is an eloquent speaker, and although I’ve no doubt that some stories are exaggerated, even if 25% of it is true, his insight was a depressing look into the ‘real’ WWE. In amazing timing, it was released a few days after Vince was announced doing a live interview with Stone Cold on the WWE Network! Even better, Punk promised round-2 with Colt to clarify any big things before closing the book on it. Here’s a recounting and my thoughts on the Punk interview, the relevant parts from the Vince interview and Punk’s follow-up podcast this week:

Punk’s reasons for leaving WWE boil down to:

    • Being injured
    • A toxic work environment (specifically with Triple H)
    • Being creatively under-booked,
    • Not being financially compensated well enough for it.

    1) Being Injured and working hurt

    • Cena rolling wrong and tearing his knee at Night of Champions
    • Hounded by Vince to return quickly after knee and elbow surgery (i.e. called as he was leaving the hospital, going on the road after 4 days); getting lazer eye surgery and someone obviously scratching his eye during the Nexus debut
    • Ryback: Specifically mentioning “steroid guy”, who “took 20 years off my life” – being extremely rough with him while working hurt; eg breaking his ribs kicking him. Their TLC match on RAW was “a horribly dangerous match with a horribly dangerous wrestler”. Upon confronting Ryback (“are you dumb as fuck or doing it on purpose?”) Ryback said he was sorry and dumb as fuck.
    • Ryback since denied the conversation and states he’ll still work as hard training, improving and cutting promos in his car. He also posted a picture of his figures celebrating after putting Punk through a table. Ha! Great.

He blasts WWE doctor Dr. Amann and labels concussion testing as useless and simply a PR stunt

    • Dr suspiciously continuously refused to excise a lump (presumably a sebaceous cyst) that became life-threateningly infected with Staph. He went to AJ Lee’s doctor and had it properly diagnosed and treated. I think Punk is right to put his faith in his company’s doctor (initially) but what he’s saying here tantamount to malpractice and criminal negligence. Of course his settlement with WWE would preclude him from suing them over this.
    • Being overprescribed Azithromycin (an antibiotic marketed as “Z-Pak”) until he literally shit his pants during a smackdown match. Hilarious.
    • WWE’s doctors batted away Punk’s concerns about having a concussion. Despite having one, he passed concussion testing while texting Colt and listening to music, and was asked to perform more tests despite passing the concussion test (rendering the test a joke). Although WWE gave a generic “our healthcare is great and doctors are respected”, Vince never mentioned or refuted these claims…so as it stands, Punk’s word is the definitive truth.

    2) A Toxic Work Environment/mutual dislike with Triple H

    • He mentions many slights, such as being offered and accepted the lead in WWE Studios’ 12 Rounds 2, if it wasn’t during the European Tour (he wanted to go as he was champion). H argued it wasn’t, but it was, and recast Orton as the lead without telling Punk first. He found out on WWE.com. That’s both spiteful and unprofessional of H.
    • Requested to take an extra urine test, despite Batista and Triple H not doing the same
    • The Shield was his creation – he wanted Ambrose, Rollins and Chris Hero as his backup; WWE came back with Big Show (groan!), Daniel Bryan and “a guy from FCW” i.e. Rollins. They agreed to exchange Hero for Roman Reigns. Then before debuting, it was changed so the Shield had no official affiliation with Punk, and now it’s Triple H/WWE’s idea, not Punk’s.
    • Although less than enthused with being asked about working Kane, he flat-out refused to wrestle Triple H at Mania 29, embittered by their horrible feud in Summer 2011.
    • Wanted a new character, with shorts and sponsorships (like Brock), was told no by Vince. A year later, part-timer Brock comes in with shorts with sponsorships on them.
    • Asked to walk friend & UFC fighter Chael Sonnen to the Octagon, as WWE champion it’d be great free publicity. Vince refused (saying UFC was ‘barbaric’) but weeks later, Triple H walked Floyd Mayweather to the ring.
    • The Big One – His Wedding Day: Months into his ‘sabbatical’, Aitch got in touch with him about returning, Punk said they’ll talk after his honeymoon (i.e. he’s open to it) but instead was officially fired on his wedding day. This was an intentional, cowardly, personal, spiteful act that should never be forgotten.

Creatively Underbooked & not compensated financially for it

    • Punk repeatedly mentions booking scenarios that all see him main event wrestlemania (Three way with Batista and Randy, Three way with Rock and Cena). It’s his ultimate goal.
    • Annoyed at losing to part-timers, why he should lose to people who won’t be around for the rest of the year.
    • If he’s not working the main event, he demanded to be paid the same as Rock, Cena, Taker etc.
    • Turned heel as a favour to Vince, despite it cutting his merchandise sales in half.
    • Feuding with Ryback was physically dangerous, and did it as a favour to Vince.
    • Unhappy with Creative – if you speak up, the writers will start writing you worse. There’s no plans for what’s next with anyone, Vince just cares about Cena.
    • He believes his own hype, that he’s the greatest creative and financial draw in wrestling. His massive ego is to be expected, all wrestlers have to believe that (if not, who else will?) Whilst it is true he outsold Cena in merchandise for a little while as babyface champion, WWE made the right financial decision that Rock/Cena II headlines WM29. Rock/Cena at WM28 was THE BIGGEST GROSSING WRESTLING EVENT OF ALL TIME, a rematch is likely bigger than any other fresh matchup. I agree with Punk that it was creatively boring, but it’s easy to understand WWE’s decision. What’s more, Punk knew Rock/Cena was the plan *6 months in advance*, so it’s hard to sympathise with them not changing their plan that makes financial sense. Punk only held the WWE so long as he was gonna drop it to the Rock at the Rumble. He was offered a plan B: Stay babyface, and have heel Bryan get the belt and job to Rock instead.
    • WWE repeatedly refused to reissue and old cheque Punk forgot to cash, and wouldn’t send him his regular royalty cheques. He eventually got it and then some in his settlement.
    • WWE Network was a reason for leaving. He spoke up to Vince & H about his concerns about payment re: the network killing their PPV business, and was repeatedly told they don’t know. WWE did delay paying wrestlers for as long as possible, and paying them less, although considering the tremendous startup costs of the Network ($75 million) and it’s underperformance (728k subscribers at the moment) the wrestlers were somewhat happy with their payoff.

Other things to note about Punk:

    • Settled (not sued) WWE, getting his royalties and damages. Although he can’t disclose details, he got WWE for a lot of money. He even refused to sign a non-disparagement clause (‘because WWE need to feel like they’ve won’)
    • Happiest he’s been in years, healthy (for a wrestler), loves his non-WWE ventures, and is financially set without them.
    • Punk is a huge wrestling mark. He absolutely loves the sport, hates how his ideas were taken from him, and repeatedly states his goal was to main event WrestleMania. It’s only when he’s been booked in an undercard match, then seeks adequate compensation as if he was. Hey, it’s great he cares so deeply about the on-screen. We need more Bret Harts and less Kevin Nashs in wrestling.
    • He chose his buddy Colt as his outlet, and stopped talking to people who had something to gain from it (ie dirtsheet reporters, podcasters like Chris Jericho)
    • Recounts Vince’s (crocodile) tears when he said he quit (in front of Hunter) saying they’re family, and their asinine decision to wait a few months to tell him he’s in breach of contract. Vince was said to be upset over the interview, it was Triple H who was livid “wanting his head/to kill Punk”.
    • Very aware of dirtsheets and the opposing negative smark comments esp. on twitter. He specifically mentions being called a “quieter” (which is hilarious) and explains blocking people as “twitter is like the fucking open window in my kitchen with somebody yelling in it”. He acknowledges disrespectful fans, specifically citing an ‘incident’ at a Blackhawks game, which got picked up by the dirtsheets. The fan shouted “HEY PHIL!” and requested a photo, which Punk regarded as impolite and blew him off. Although I’d agree that politeness is key, I’d wager most fans don’t know how to act when they’re close to one of their idols. Even I got a little starstruck meeting Dean Ambrose, for example. He should’ve spent more time hammering how to act, instead of chastising bad behaviour.

The first podcast an incredible interview, and maybe Punk’s right. It’s difficult to fight the system when you’re rehabbing injuries, fighting for your spot, while having a busy road schedule. I recounted it in detail as he says a lot of important things. Also, WWE wouldn’t want to be caught out like they did with Del Rio and Punk…Maybe he can change WWE sitting on his couch.

Vince’s Interview with Steve Austin on the WWE Network:

As expected, Vince gave business answers and Austin did not pick up Vince on any of his bullshit. Still an entertaining listen as it’s probably the best we’ll ever get out of Vince. They only talked about Punk for about 20 seconds; saying firing him on his wedding day was a miscommunication error between wwe and the lawyers, and he’s sorry and hopes they can work together again someday.

As a side note, Vince in general took NO responsibility for any of WWE’s problems:

    • Punk leaving was largely due to his lack of communication and him being a loner
    • JR left because he was unprofessional, not working hard enough
    • WWE Superstars aren’t ambitious enough, encouraging them to take risks (despite burying those who do, Zack Ryder anyone!)
    • No competition? The territories put themselves out of business (which is Bret screwed Bret levels of bollocks!)

    Punk’s Follow-up Interview:

Part 2 had an extremely different vibe – an easy-going chat, with just a few wrestling tidbits, often diverting into talking about TV shows and movies.

    Points to note from it:

    • Punk knows the lyrics to Honky Tonk’s WWF theme (that’s awesome)
    • Sees both sides of people chanting CM Punk at AJ, hopes people chant AJ; and understands CM Punk chants when something WWE puts on is awful.
    • He didn’t rule out a return to WWE but has no interest. He dismisses how Jericho says he’s like him in 2005, (ie just wait 2.5 years) but he wasn’t fired on his wedding day.
    • He doesn’t accept Vince’s publicity stunt apology. If was truly sorry he’d’ve said so in June, or call or visit, not wait until a WWE network special.

He mentions a few more slights WWE did:

    • Wizard World offered Punk $20,000 for 4 hours work. They asked WWE and said no, here’s AJ, Bryan and the Shield. The reasoning being they ‘need him’ on the Mexico tour – so Punk demanded $20,000 as a pay off. They agreed, then paid him $5,000. Punk threw a strop and got another $4,000.
    • THQ asked WWE for Punk on the cover, WWE came back with “how about Sheamus” and Punk was sent an email chain of them trying to push them away from Punk.
    • LA Ink wanted Punk (it was set up by Punk’s friend) and WWE said no, here’s Randy
    • He got crabby when multiple people came up to punk reminding him to put over Roman and the lads while winning a 3-on-1. Even people who had nothing to do with the match. He was fine with it but was annoyed being badgered, and offered to put them over themselves, just shut up.
    • He’s also very happy for Del Rio, saying you can’t put a no-compete on an independent contractor.
    • He ended it by thanking his fans for supporting him and buying his merch. If u don’t like him, don’t follow him on twitter.

Overall: An easy, enjoyable but unnecessary listen; more he booked having a follow-up interview in case there was more things he needed to clarify (and great timing in case Vince said anything contentious on the Austin show.) He sounded like it’d all blown over already, he’s got his closure. Although neither Vince or Punk’s follow-up is necessary but an entertaining listen. Hearing all of these petty, intentional slights makes me pissed off for him! Definitely check out the first interview if you haven’t!
