Homer’s Odyssey

Simpsons_0103Simpsons_0103bSimpsons_0103d

Season 1, Episode 3
Original Air Date: January 21, 1990
Chalkboard gag: I will not Skateboard in the Halls
Couch gag: the couch falls apart.

Plot: After causing an accident, Homer gets fired from his supervising technician post at Springfield Nuclear Power Plant (SNPP). He is inspired to go on a safety crusade, eventually accepting a job as Safety Inspector at SNPP.

Thoughts:
• Otto’s first appearance, a huge stoner.
• Bart is mischievous but he is antagonised by other kids (Sherri & Terri kiss him, making him scream). Oddly, they are pale whilst their father is very dark skinned. Their mom has some explaining to do!
• He takes his unemployment very seriously. It gets quite dark. Desperate for a drink, he smashes Bart’s piggybank. He resigns to kill himself so he can provide for his family via his life insurance. He snaps out of it when his family nearly get run over and his motivation to make Springfield safer makes his family (Bart especially) and the town respect him.
• The police sketch of El Barto (Bart as an adult convict) is pretty funny.
• Oh my God, BLACK SMITHERS!
• Bart/Nancy Cartright does a lot of miscellaneous voices. Since she’s only capable of one voice, you can tell really easily.

Notable quotables:
• Marge “There, there, Homer. You’ve caused plenty of industrial accidents and you’ve always bounced back.”
• Homer “Beer! Now there’s a temporary solution.”
• (After Bart rings Moe’s Tavern as I.P. Freely)
Homer: You’ll get that punk someday, Moe.
Moe: Oh I don’t know, he’s tough to catch. He keeps changing his name.

Overall: I’d really forgotten how moral and story-focused the Simpsons was. A fine watch, even just for Black Smithers!
